Before you email, read this page.

1. All email goes through the webmaster for rickriordan.com. Rick will do his best to read all fan email forwarded by the webmaster, but due to the volume of email the site receives, please be aware that Rick may not be able to respond personally to every email. Appropriate, polite emails that follow the guidelines on this page are much more likely to get a response.

2. Be sure you read the website to see if your question was already answered -- especially the FAQ below. If you ask a question that is already answered on the website (or a question the website specifically says cannot be answered -- especially about the movie) you most likely will not receive a reply.

3. When you email someone you don't know, treat the email like a formal letter. It's polite to put something in the subject line of the email, start the letter with a greeting like Dear Mr. Riordan, and type your name at the end. Remember Rick was a teacher for many years. He's not going to hold you accountable for every misspelling, but try your best! Please don't send a text message from your phone. You will not receive a reply.

4. Never give out your address or phone number in an email without first getting your parents' permission. There's really no reason you need to include this information when writing to Rick.

5. Try to put all comments and questions into your first email. Due to the volume of email the site receives, if you get a response and write back multiple times asking more questions, you probably will not receive additional responses.

6. Please don't send file attachments unless you've gotten permission from us in advance. Attachments can carry viruses, and for security reasons they will be deleted unopened.

Rick's Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Is there going to be a Percy Jackson movie?

Answer: Chris Columbus (who did the first two Harry Potter films) has been signed to direct and produce The Lightning Thief. Fox 2000 is the movie studio. They are working on a script and the tentative release date is Nov. 13, 2009. So far, there is no information about casting. That's all the information I have at the present time. Please don't ask me further questions about the movie. That's all I can tell you!

2. I want to be in the movie. Do you have any information on casting?

Answer: Join the club! I get thousands of emails from kids who want to be in the movie. I totally understand why it's a fun thing to think about, but I can't give you any information about this. Honest, I have nothing to do with the movie. I am not involved in the casting process in any way, nor can I tell you who to contact or how to contact them. I'm afraid I won't know more later, nor can I contact you if I find out additional information. Basically, I can't help you. Sorry!

3. How many books will there be in the Percy Jackson series?

Answer: Five. There may be more books about Camp Half-Blood in the future, but the main story that started in The Lightning Thief will be wrapped up in book five.

4. When does the next one come out?

Answer: Book four, The Battle of the Labyrinth, will be available May 6, 2008.

5. Can you tell me anything about book four?

Answer: Only what's already on the website. Everything else is secret until the book is released!

6. Can you tell me the title or anything about book five?

Answer: No. As soon as I'm ready to share that information, I will post it on the website, but it's going to be quite a while before I release any information about book five!

7. Do you have any advice for writers?

Answer: You bet! Check the website here.

8. I'm a teacher, librarian or bookseller interested in booking an event. How do I do this?

Answer: Check the website here before you email. It will answer most of your questions.

9. Is there really a Camp Half-Blood, and how do I sign up?

Answer: I know of two bookstores that run Camp Half-Blood sessions during the summer -- Bookpeople in Austin, Texas, and the Little Shop of Stories in Decatur, Georgia. These are day camps for kids, and they're lots of fun, but I am not directly involved in the camps. For more information on registration, you would need to contact the sponsoring bookstores.

10. Where did you get your inspiration for the Percy Jackson series?

Answer: Check the website here.

You can send letters to Rick in care of his publisher:

Just be aware that it can take several months for mail to be forwarded to Rick in this way. Rick always reads fan letters, but he cannot promise to respond via regular mail. If you write from your school's address, it's a good idea to include your teacher's name with the return address, like:  Joe Smith c/o Mrs. Perez's sixth grade class, Holmes Middle School, etc. If you do get a reply letter, this makes it easier for the school to get it to you. Also be sure to include your own last name. Finally, if you write a letter during the last months of the school year, like April and beyond, it's very unlikely you'll get a response before your school goes on summer break, so it's probably better to write from a home address.
